Central Arizona Flute Ensemble (CAFE Flutes)
Description
Color your world with music! CAFE enriches, enlightens, and inspires Central Arizona residents by presenting interactive concerts and educational programs that showcase the flute family's diverse instruments.
The 7-member flute choir offers interactive concert programs that feature various musical styles: show tunes, patriotic, folk, oldies, pop, Disney, and classical. They demonstrate all their instruments, including the 10-foot-long contrabass flute, and introduce each piece with interesting tidbits about the music and composer.
The flutists take it a step further during the concert by passing around demonstration flutes and piccolos, allowing the audience to experience the instruments firsthand. They deepen the connection with the listeners by hosting a Q&A segment, and by celebrating those in the audience with birthdays that month by playing an unconventional arrangement of "Happy Birthday." This personal touch makes the concert experience memorable and shows audience members they are valued and appreciated.
CAFE believes that concerts should be more than just a passive listening experience; they should be dynamic, engaging, and fun for everyone involved. From the moment audience members walk through the door, they aim to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The flutists greet attendees personally, setting the tone for a friendly and interactive concert experience. This initial engagement helps break down the barrier between performers and audience, making everyone feel like part of the event.
Each piece they perform is introduced with interesting background information and trivia about the music and composers. These introductions are designed to provide context and enhance the audience’s appreciation of the music. By sharing stories and insights, they make the music more relatable and engaging, giving listeners a deeper understanding of what they are about to hear.
One of the unique aspects of a flute choir is the diversity of instruments within the flute family. To highlight this, they include demonstrations of the different flutes they use, such as the piccolo, C flute, alto flute, bass flute, and even the 10-foot-long contrabass flute. They explain the distinctive qualities and roles of each instrument to demystify the instruments and pique curiosity.
Since 2014, they have performed over 250 concerts, including Desert Botanical Garden, Mesa Art Center, libraries, art galleries, Tempe History Museum, and Arizona Broadway Theater.

CAFE loves performing at libraries. Here is a reference from Caroline Raso from the Litchfield Park Library.
To Whom It May Concern:
On November 5, 2022, CAFE Flutes performed at the Litchfield Park Library. They were here early to set up and prepare for the concert. I left the Community Room door open so people could hear the ensemble tuning and practicing for the performance. Many people started to congregate around the door and ask what was going on. We had a large crowd of attendees that day for our small venue.
CAFE Flutes provided an exciting and engaging performance. They played a variety of music from classical to jazz. Each member stood up and spoke about the pieces that they were playing. After the concert was finished, many of the attendees told me how much they enjoyed the group. I recommend CAFE Flutes to any library that is looking for a musical performance that is not only a joy to listen to, but a learning experience.
Sincerely,
Caroline Raso,
